Anyone who had a Commodore 64 home computer in the mid-eighties would know that a Datassette was the cassette player that came with it for loading up the games software. This is a very tidy – I presume debut – collection of 10 instrumental electro tracks. Lovingly produced, Datassette revels in minimalist electro beats, bobbling bass lines and brisk, melodic synthesiser tones. Tracks such as Worms and Minus Fourteen are fairly fast-paced and carry a strong sense of momentum, with electro-pellets fiercely clattering above scatterbrained yet mindful programmed beats. There’s also room for manoeuvre, the ambient strains of Pluck are easy to warm to, whilst Remains is cold, dark and hollow. Datassette is capable of conjuring up meaty BOC-like atmospheres splintered by a maelstrom of dense breaks – the finale, Melting Faces, is a prime example. Datassette is by no means a classic album, but an intriguing and often enjoyable record that upkeeps Ai Recordings strong sense of identity as one of the few modern independent electronic labels with the enthusiasm to ride side-saddle to the likes of Warp. |
