DEPTH AFFECT - Hero Crisis
6.1

Autres Directions In Music ~ moulin018 ~ 6th June

Following Depth Affect’s debut album, Arche-Lymb in 2006, comes this sophomore release created by David Bideau and Remy Charrier. The debut was a heady mix of dislocated electro-acoustic tracks, and Hero Crisis runs along similar lines.

It could be my imagination, but the Akai MPC Sampler seems to be an integral component of Depth Affect’s instrument armoury. The opening, Junior International feels very Prefuse 73, as a collection of sequenced samples grind together repetitively to fashion a pastiche of modern electronica.

The title track follows a similar direction, as stuttering female vocal samples chatter nervously amidst catchy stop-start melodies, it’s all very click’n’cut, but effective and listenable fare. Such rhythm arrangement and production techniques are all the rage throughout Hero Crisis, with a clutch of tracks such as Street Level and Dusty Records allowing hip hop or more traditional vocals to broaden the spectrum.

Certainly a more commercial record than Arche-Lymb, Hero Crisis features a curious mix of leftfield electronica and melancholy electronic pop, which occasionally hits the mark but equally-frequently loses its way where the threading of the tracks comes due to some directionless acoustic sampling.
