Fifth album to date for Hebden; the previous Everything Ecstatic was probably his best to date. There Is Love In You is certainly no great departure from what we have heard before from the artist – busy arpeggio rhythms blended with fractured beats and jazz-tinged ambiences – although this record is certainly more uncomplicated and, to some extent, melodious. The opening Angel Echoes is fairly simplistic, built around a couple of spliced female vocal samples and a steady beat, the surrounding arrangement features Hebden’s usual busy mix of percussion and twinkling keys. Circling is one of the most inviting tracks on offer, its sequence of melodic keys running prettily throughout, slowly joined by fairground synthesiser sounds, and later warm bass pads. These songs pretty much set the tone for the rest of the album; constantly flirting with intricate percussive fills, bells, whistles and the odd acoustic guitar string. The beats are sparse and range in tempo, but there’s nothing here that would entice you to do anything other than sit back and listen. More pungent melodies
evolve on the pleasant This Unfolds and Reversing, with its lengthy,
ambient Eno drones. Plastic People, meanwhile, highlights both Hebden’s
strengths and weakness; a pungent mix of the melodic and the experimental
– yet somehow stunted in its growth. Formative ideas rarely blossom;
yet simply railroaded to a passive, albeit congenial, conclusion. There Is Love In You is very pleasant but a rather safe and predictable album. It certainly takes a while to grow on you and fully reveal its persuasive charm, at which point there is much to appreciate, but I still find Hebden’s work is often restrained from reaching its full potential and lacks emotional sincerity at its very core. |
