John Dahlbäck, the prolific Swedish tech-house producer, is only 23, yet has almost 100 releases under his belt. His fifth album, Winners & Fools, released on his own Pickadoll label, departs slightly from his usual productions, moving much closer to a melodic, electronic pop template. Of course, the dancefloor will always be Dahlbäck’s stock in trade – or one would assume that, but soon after the short intro, the track Gold And Fear declares the musician’s intentions to flirt with crisp, sparkling electronic pop – albeit instrumental. On Sidewalk (feat. Elodie), Dahlbäck invites female vocals on board to display further mainstream tendencies, hopelessly commercial, but remarkably enjoyable nonetheless. On Honeywell, Dahlbäck switches back to instrumental mode, this has the feel of Air or Daft Punk, lush, ethereal electronic music with a sideways nod to seventies synthesiser music. Neither is consistency a problem for Dahlbäck, engaging the listener with tracks such as We Are The Duo, built on a bizarre premise of sampled bicycle bells and car horns, and Balcony Dance, which at first seems almost too sickly sweet until the spacey synth sweeps hove into view – but even so, this is unwavering teen market pop. More radio-friendly efforts arrive via the euphoric World of Love and You And Me, once again featuring Elodie. How much Dahlbäck has compromised his reputation as a tech-house dance music producer remains to be seen, but it’s obvious that the youngster is as equally interested in promoting in-your-face anthemic pop than lurking forever in the shadows. Although Winners & Fools is at times a little too vivacious for my liking, you have to admire Dahlbäck’s ambition, not to mention execution. |
