Vancouver is a well-known hotbed for electronic music; the now 600,000 vicinity city has spawned a number of influential artists, mostly in the industrial domain – names such as Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy immediately spring to mind. This fairly sparse compilation features 10 contributors, and in truth the music is often as murky and overcast as Vancouver’s grey, cloudy skies, beginning with Alextronik – Drone, a lengthy instrumental with dark keys lengthily depressed, Thomas Jirku follows with fairly mellow techno, lit by some fluttering melodic keys. Gavin Froome’s Plane Jane raises the tempo to produce a more concise, clubbers outing – this is almost Ibiza-friendly, but uninspiring dance floor fodder all the same. Likewise, Jay Tripwire’s trancey Noodle Frenzy, moving out of the slipstream with some spiralling synth wizardry to bolster those steadfast beats. The first vocal track comes courtesy of Christer’s How You Like It - bog standard electronic pop, followed by the stealthy reggae tint of Calamalka’s Cropper. Again, pleasant enough, but like most of the tracks here, is dryly repetitive and lacking real flair and imagination. Fauxliage up next, the Bill Leeb side-project – the instrumental ‘Vibing’ represents a step-up in production values, it’s one of the few tracks you wouldn’t mind giving a second or third spin. The Hermit’ Find Someone Who Actually Loves You continues the slight upsurge in quality. Remixed by label mate Gel Sol, this is elusive and expansive instrumental electronica. Skipping Peter Samples’ guitar, piano and vocal sample-based And All The Kids Smile, Telefuzz closes the compilation with The Ovaltine Prophecies, a warm and fluid instrumental by Don Verbrilli. All in all, a highly varied compilation with a clutch of pleasing contributions, but Manoeuvres 2 often struggles to distinguish itself from the morass and doesn't really fly Vancouver's electronic music flag with great distinction. |
