MILLION DAN - Spektrum

Million Dappa ~ n/a ~ 5th May

Former member of British hip hop group, The Demon Boyz, Mike K (Million Dan) departed in 2004 to release his debut single Dogz N Sledgez. Next step was to create his own Million Dappa label, from where he has released this debut album, Spektrum.

This is fairly impotent hip hop fare, perhaps differentiated by Million Dan’s heavy use of audio sampling, which not only separates virtually every track, but sources material from old rock albums, electro music – even classical on Acceleration feat Niambi.

Sometimes this works deftly, other times not, the sampling of Vincent Price's vocal laugh, so prominently memorable from Michael Jackson’s Thriller, is an immediate turn off.

However, a healthy sense of humour is fairly evident on tracks such as Inner City Got Plenty Cases, where Million Dan’s vigorous Jamaican vocal drawl serves him well. There are a couple of decent possible single cuts too, Mic Chek stands out boldly.

As you might expect; self-confidence is not a quality that Million Dan lacks, although durability it might. It’s cheap and cheerful, it’s home-made hip hop, but by the same token there’s not enough here to differentiate Million Dan from what is already a grossly over-populated generic medium.
