It seems strange that someone should release a debut album that features mostly remixes performed by the artist for other artists, but that’s what we have here. Morgan Page is a DJ/Producer, and more importantly remixer, and Elevate is a 13 track hybrid of mostly remixes and original songs.

The album begins with two self-penned Page tracks, in union with vocalists Lissie (The Longest Road) and Tyler James (Call My Name) – both tracks are melodic, mildly danceable efforts. Likewise Fade Away feat. Matt Wasley, although in retrospect it’s noticeable that Page’s own songwriting talents are not as amenable as those for whom he has remixed for. They’re well-produced dance-pop songs, but a bit bland and lacking the sort of memorable hooks and melodies that make you want to go back for more.

On the flip side, Page is a useful remixer, gently airbrushing other artists songs with a deft electronic wand. Jenny Owen Youngs’ Fuck Was I is the first effort to really stand out – a highly enjoyable electro-acoustic track, whilst elsewhere Page handles Nelly Furtado’s Maneater with verve and panache and gives added punch to the Delerium track Angelicus – although the gratifying sereneness of the original is lost in translation. Leigh Nash, who also worked with Delerium, is remixed by Page on the track Nervous In The Light Of Dawn.

One of my favourite selections from the album is Cambodian rock outfit Dengue Fever’s Sleepwalking Through The Mekong, Page turns this into an epic trip hop track, all the while retaining its world music feel. This is followed by Under, an excellent slow-burning chill out track with hypnotic female vocals.

Overall, this is a decent package of remixes, although Page’s own frequent efforts struggle to really hit the mark. With most of the remixes wallowing in downtempo grooves and female vocals, the worldbeat band and Page’s Nettwerk label mates Delerium is the direction this collection chooses to follow – so if you like them, you’ll probably be attracted to much of this.
