Italian-born
DJ, Patrizio Orsini, reaches out with what appears to be his debut release.
28.50, the title of the album and length of the record, starts off with
panache as a cacophony of spliced samples are woven together to create
a dry yet involving slice of instrumental IDM.
The clunky 01 follows a similar trajectory, this time lobbing cut-up
vocal frames into the mix as a relentless beat thuds away in the background.
The best track is probably 11, because it contains the antidote to what
most of 28.50 is missing, atmosphere. Its dark, grainy ambience offset
by slimline cascading drum sounds amidst flickering crackles. Brooding
stuff.
The programming is inventive, meticulously interlaced throughout, and
likely to appeal to IDM purists. However, those looking for something
more emotionally involving will probably wilt before the end, as Poratz’s
dehydrated sound lacks the oxygen of sentiment and becomes depreciatingly
repetitive after a while.
