Cousins,
and owners of Seed Records, Richard Bevan and Josh Doherty return with
a new EP, following a trio of Posthuman album releases between 2001
and 2006.
The duo are well known on the techno circuit, particularly for organising
events/parties that have previously played host to the likes of Aphex
Twin, Vibert, Funkstorung, Richard X and Goldfrapp. Doherty also performs
with downtempo electronic act, Digitonal – who happen to be particular
favourite of mine.
The Monsters & Vortices is far from downtempo, however, the EP continues
the twosome’s penchant for releasing dark, menacing techno tracks.
Krill opens with metronomic beats overlaid by crisp hi-hats and aggressive
bass warbles, ramping up the tempo mid-stream to aim its target squarely
at the dancefloor.
Callisto is more delicate and reflective, but again Bevan and Doherty
delight in developing the track from its initially monotonous techno
foundations into something more involving, brooding and danceable. Monsters
Exist, meanwhile, treads more familiar boards, serving up twitchy, uncompromising
underground techno, whilst the EP closes with the ambient drones of
The Karman Vortices – encompassing strange vocal samples; imagine
Boards of Canada in need of Prozac – or more Prozac.
All-in-all, a varied and interesting EP from Posthuman that successfully
avoids techno’s more predictable pitfalls, although not outstanding.
