Notes/Review:

The project of cousins Richard Bevan and Joshu Doherty, who, according to the press release, hosted parties in an abandoned underground train station – wish I’d been there. Bevan is owner of Seed Records, and Doherty relaunched the techno label B12 Records, and, rather surprisingly – considering the content of this album - is a prominent member of classical/ambient electronica band Digitonal.

Syn Emergence, meanwhile, is Posthuman’s 6th album - and pretty much a straight-up techno record, despite some lofty shades of dark electronica. Grisly, low-end synth chords brood manfully throughout, shattered by pounding, consistent beats and gliding shards of sound.

I very much doubt a home listening set-up will do full justice to an album that, for the majority of the time, is intensely focused on deep/dark clubbing dens. A large proportion of tracks are incessantly powerful - the mesmeric Crone in particular being subtly brilliant. Otherwise, I find Syn Emergence to be a good album, but by no means outstanding. Tracks such as Spoken and Se Ces One do offer an alternative to the brickbat beats - shimmering with elusive drones and twitching rhythms, they have an old-school techno flavour that reference the past well even if they struggle to bring anything genuinely refreshing to the table.

That certainly can’t be said of the packaging, however, check out the double picture LP which features some absolutely stunning artwork.

To conclude, Syn Emergence is a more-than-passable techno record with some expansive electronic shades - but get your big speakers out, you’ll need them.
