RECUE - All The Wrong Places
5.7

Rednetic Recordings ~ RN018 ~ 12th May

Recue is the work of Finnish musician/producer Riku Annala, and All The Wrong Places is the 18th release on Rednetic Recordings - a label that shares much the same philosophy as Californian experimental/electronic label n5MD.

The album promotes as subtle form of electronica, showcasing 9 fairly low-key instrumental tracks – although certainly not ambient. Instead, dulcet tones flicker over crunchy beats and airy atmospherics; much of the music has a glitch-based texture running throughout the production.

The mix is fairly busy throughout, although sometimes over-saturated with various micro-tones and percussion but carefully designed nonetheless. Tracks such as Badhairday and Savant (Bad Loop Remixe) are vaguely danceable, but probably not intended for that purpose.

In truth, All The Wrong Places makes for pleasant listening, but is rather unremarkable. This is one of those albums you play 5 times but is later a challenge to remember any specific rhythms or melodies. The most enjoyable tracks both open and close the album, from the pretty, melodic Gliss to the buoyant, effervescent Himanka.

For a small label, still trying to find its feet, All The Wrong Places is a fairly safe release that is unlikely to distinguish the label from its peers, yet still quite listenable as long as you don’t set your target too high.
