Ninja Tune’s Sold Steel series continues with It Came From The Sea, and this time it’s Brighton’s Simon Green (Bonobo) at the controls. Green delights in mixing his favourite Bonobo tracks with as many choice DJ cuts as he can ram into the album’s hour-long playing time. Highlights arrive from the sitar-infused beats of the Karminsky Experience (Exploration), Flevans’ Lemon Jelly-inspired, breakbeat-driven Hey Mr Bundle, and the South American adventure, I Know A Little Cuban by Hugo Maldoro. On top of all that we have Green’s Bonobo project highlighting itself as the quintessential Ninja Tune act, lovingly merging breakeats with oodles of jazzy keyboards and tones – witness classic Bonobo tracks, Flutter, Pick Up, and an excellent new number, Recurring – a little more mellow than usual but immediately inviting nevertheless. On the jazz front, there’s plenty more action too - from Diesler (Sandcastles), Solid Steel Players (Les Fingres), Jazz Juice (Marra Bossa), and the brilliant Nat Adderly (Introduction). And once that lot’s left you breathless, you can try something a little different – like the interweaving strings, guitars and beats of the organic Hidden, by King Steven, Amon Tobin’s low-key Easy Muffin, the closing ambience of Savath & Savalas (Paths In Soft Focus), or Super Numeri’s blissfully avant garde Otters Pond. What a wildly eclectic compilation this is, packed full of great tunes and outrageously talented laptop-sequenced musicianship, all classily mixed by Green. This could be the best Solid Steel mix to date. |
