The French house music project The Supermen Lovers by Guillaume Atlan is best known for the 2001 single Starlight - a big hit worldwide. Atlan’s third album progresses his ethic into a mish mash of ‘70s-influenced funk, disco bass and electro, collated into a punchy electronic sound. With 16 tracks on offer, Between the Ages rarely pauses for breath, as stuttering, programmed beats judder beneath a spray of spliced vocal (from a slew of contributors), funky guitar licks and stabbing bass synths. More like a rollercoaster than a collection of standout tracks, Atlan seems intent on punching his listener unconscious with a stream of generic funk motifs, which when collated together are reminiscent of a period rather than anything else. The gimmicky nature of the album, and its various interludes, often detract, and in some case distract from what could have been a more honed and unified body of work. That said, some tracks do inevitably deliver ‘the funk’: Take a Chance (feat. Rick Bailey), We Got That Booty (feat, AntOnin), Say No More, and Let Me Show You. Unless you’re a risk taker or familiar with The Supermen Lovers already, one might suggest you download said tracks and progress from there. |
