To date, Trona’s only claim to fame appears to be a remix for Icelandic electronic band, Gus Gus. This nu-breaks artists cites influences such as BT, Crystal Method and Prodigy – the middle of those probably being the most illustrative of Trona’s sound. Sound System is an upbeat album of tracks, constructed almost wholly out of driving break beats and moody rhythms, punctuated by shrill, moody synthesiser motifs. Vocals are sparse and hip hop flavoured, more slogan-based than lyrical. For the most part, Sound System has a fairly derivative engine chugging away at its centre, most of the break beats are fairly recognisable and appear to have been plucked from your common back yard sample break CD, and in all honesty, with so much creative technology at musician’s fingertips these days it’s difficult to respect this type of clichéd exercise in track building. Although the album has an effervescent, upbeat tone, and is fairly danceable in places – strong melodies are at a premium, and the vocalists do not have the personality to really distinguish themselves from a welter of similar music in what is a heavily diluted scene. And therein lies Trona’s problem, despite some stand out tracks, such as Jaded Love (a nice cover of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love) and Locked Down, distinguishable only by its manic guitar riffs, the rest of the album is a fairly flaccid exercise in cut and paste electro breaks and sampling. With a second radio mix of Jaded Love closing the album, it’s pretty obvious that Trona has thrown all his eggs into one basket – it’s shame he couldn't have been a golden goose. |
