| Ninja Tune ~ Zen CD75 ~ March 2003 | ||
Great new compilation mix of old school Electro, Funk and Drum and Bass from the excellent Ninja Tunes label. Hexstatic are the mixers, who make a great job of selecting new and old electro beats that rub together in seamless analogue/digital harmony. You know your in for a treat almost right from the off, when DJ Food’s Mr Scruff’s Ninjatune Megamix is given a Hexstatic re-edit and blended into Dawn Penn’s No,No,No in Drum and Bass style. After you’ve recovered from that, Hexstatic slam on the greatest Hip-Hop track ever in Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5’s The Message. This is where things start to get a little weird, as Ike & Tina Turner’s Funky Mule takes a seat next to David Holme’s awesome break-beat driven Rip Rip. The mix chugs along nicely, taking in some Solid Steel mixes and Coldcut before jumping into the 21st Century with Boards Of Canada’s superb Aquarius. For those not familiar with the ‘Boards’, they’re a must have addition to any electronic enthusiasts collection. Unsung Heroes’ Daily Intake is another beauty, with some top notch scratching in a megamix of their own. Some more classics are pulled out of the bag at this point, in the form of Man Parrish & Rocker’s Revenger, soon followed with top-notch rap from Young MC (Know How). Hexstatic even push the boat out by offering their very own new track, Telemetron, along with the accompanying CD video. With so many classic tracks plucked from the archive, this WILL be the hands down retro-electro compilation of the year. |
