VHS HEAD - Video Club

Skam Records ~ Skald 023 ~ 21st September

Blackpool-based VHS Head; the name gives you a clue as to what you can expect to find here - mangled retro electronica built on 80s B movie samples.

Be warned, however, this 5-track ‘album’ only lasts 13 minutes.

The opening intro draws on a collage of vocal samples from the ‘golden era’ of VHS, when movie promos were led by gravely-voiced, psychopath-sounding middle-aged men. The following Video Club amalgamates the samples more cleverly, into a mosaic of spliced garb and reverbed melodies.

Rent Responsibility is lighter, almost stepping on eighties synth pop tones as light keys flirt over knuckle-dragging beats and moist female vocals. The track is driven by an absorbing bass line and gets twisted beyond recognition the longer it continues - as does much of this record.

Growler Spit You Out and Kincaid close this mini-album as it becomes clearer exactly who VHS Head’s influences are - from a production viewpoint at least. The reams of samples and slam-dunked melodies are push-button-inserted with similar manic glee to Prefuse 73 or Warp’s one album wonder Jackson and his Computer Band.

Thank god for download eh? You’d otherwise feel ripped off paying full whack for this 13-minute adventure in mangled B movie electronica; even if you do get a free video card inserted into the jewel case for your troubles.
